Living in Balance with Nature
About Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the sister science of Yoga, it literally translates from Sanskrit as the “knowledge of life.” It is the ancient holistic health system focused on creating harmony between a person and the surrounding environment.
Wisdom of Ayurveda teaches to understand your unique mind-body constitution and the unique nature of any imbalances that may lead to a disease (lack of ease). It gives tools to reconnect to your body, mind and spirit through the five senses and to utilize natural resources available near you to return your optimal balance and health.
Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of using seasonal and locally grown produce because of nature's intelligence in providing exactly what our bodies need in a given climate and season. We are Nature, the key is to recall that and find our home there.
Journey to Balance
The journey towards health and balance is unique for each of us and involves many steps forward and sometimes occasional steps back. It is important to approach this not as a quick fix, but with an understanding that you are establishing new healthy lifestyle that will benefit you for the rest of your life. Making changes one at a time is the best way to ensure that they will be lasting.
In some instances, healing occurs quite rapidly, and in others, somewhat slowly. It depends on how deep-seated the imbalance is, how long there has been an imbalance, and the personal commitment to healing that each individual makes.
About Doshas
Doshas are the three types that define your unique constitution. They are a combination of five elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether. Each dosha has a number of corresponding qualities that are expressed in the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of our being.
Vata dosha represents the elements Ether and Air. It governs all movement—the flow of the breath, the pulsation of the heart, all muscle contractions, cellular mobility and communication throughout the mind and the nervous system. Ether is the idea of space and connectedness. Air is the idea of movement. Together, Ether and Air are all about motion, lightness and expansion. The Vata body has smaller, thiner and lighter features. Vata brings light-heartedness, filled with enthusiasm and creativity.
Pitta dosha represents the elements of Fire and Water, but is mostly fire. It governs nutrition and metabolism, body temperature, and the light of understanding. Fire is the idea of heat, transformation and illumination. Water adds smoothness and flow. In combination, those of a Pitta nature tend to be warm and fiery. The Pitta body is moderate in size with moderate-sized features. Pitta brings focus, clarity and logic to the mind.
Kapha dosha represents the elements of Earth and Water. It hydrates all cells and systems, lubricates the joints, moisturizes the skin, maintains immunity, and protects the tissues. Earth is the idea of solidity and stability. Water is the idea of flow. Together, Earth and Water represent groundness, stability and a sweet compassion.
